Why are the barbels on my Adolfo's Cory wearing away?

Barbel erosion is almost always caused by a combination of sharp substrate (like rough gravel) and poor water quality at the bottom of the tank. Switching to fine sand and maintaining excellent hygiene usually prevents this, though severely eroded barbels may never fully grow back.

How can I tell the difference between Adolfo's Cory and Corydoras duplicareus?

While they look very similar, *Hoplisoma adolfoi* has a noticeably thinner black band running along its back. Additionally, *duplicareus* has small serrations on the posterior edge of its pectoral fin spines, which are absent in *adolfoi*.

Do I have to keep them in a group?

Yes. They are a highly social, shoaling species that rely on group numbers for security. Keeping them in groups of at least six (ideally more) ensures they display their natural, confident foraging behaviours.

Why does my corydoras occasionally dart to the surface?

This is entirely normal behaviour. Corydoras have a modified intestine that allows them to extract oxygen from atmospheric air. They will periodically dart to the surface to take a gulp of air, even in well-oxygenated aquariums.

Can I keep them in a hardwater aquarium?

While captive-bred specimens are somewhat adaptable, they naturally originate from very soft, acidic waters. They will not thrive in hard, alkaline water (high pH and high GH) and may suffer a reduced lifespan or fail to breed.
