Can I keep an Atlantic Salmon in a home aquarium?

No. Atlantic Salmon grow to over a metre in length, require vast volumes of intensely filtered, chilled water, and naturally undergo a migration from freshwater to the ocean. They are only suitable for industrial hatcheries or major public aquariums.

Why do Atlantic Salmon change colour?

They change colour to adapt to different life stages. In the ocean, they are bright silver to blend into the pelagic environment. When they return to freshwater to spawn, they absorb their scales and take on dark bronze, purplish, or reddish-brown hues.

Do Atlantic Salmon die after they spawn?

Not necessarily. While spawning takes a massive physical toll and many do perish, between 5% and 10% survive the ordeal. These surviving fish, called 'kelts', return to the sea to feed and may spawn again in future years.

A smolt is a juvenile salmon that has undergone physiological changes (smoltification) to survive the transition from freshwater to saltwater, turning silvery in preparation for its migration to the ocean.

How far do Atlantic Salmon migrate?

Their migrations can span thousands of miles. Fish born in the rivers of the UK, Ireland, or Canada often travel as far as the western coast of Greenland to access rich ocean feeding grounds before returning home.
