Why is my Bala Shark constantly swimming into the glass?

This is often a sign of stress called 'glass surfing'. It usually indicates that the aquarium is too small for them, they are being kept in too small a group, or water parameters are poor. Bala Sharks need extensive swimming space and a shoal of at least five to feel secure.

Can I keep just one Bala Shark?

It is highly discouraged. Bala Sharks are obligate shoaling fish. Kept singly, they become extremely stressed, skittish, and prone to disease or fatal jumping attempts. They should always be kept in groups of five or more.

How big do Bala Sharks get?

While they are often sold as tiny 5 cm juveniles, Bala Sharks grow rapidly and can reach lengths of 25 to 35 cm in adulthood, requiring an exceptionally large aquarium.

Will a Bala Shark eat smaller fish?

Although they are peaceful and not predatory by nature, they are large omnivores. Very small tankmates, such as neon tetras or small shrimp, may eventually be eaten simply because they fit into the shark's mouth.
