Sexing is difficult outside of breeding time. Mature males often have a broader, more squared-off jawline to accommodate mouthbrooding. During spawning, males possess a two-pronged vent, whereas the female's vent is a single cone.

Why is my Banggai Cardinalfish not eating?

If it is a male housed with a female, he may be mouthbrooding eggs. Males will refuse food for up to 30 days while holding the clutch. If it is a newly introduced or single fish, check water parameters and try feeding live brine shrimp to trigger a feeding response.

Do I need to keep a sea urchin with them?

No. While they naturally associate with long-spined Diadema sea urchins in the wild for protection, they do perfectly well in aquariums without them, provided they have rockwork or coral branches to retreat into.

Can I keep a group of them together?

Juveniles can be kept in a group, but as they mature into adults, two dominant fish will usually pair off and become highly aggressive towards the remaining cardinalfish. It is highly recommended to keep them only as a single pair long-term unless the aquarium is exceptionally large.
