Why is my Blue Dolphin Cichlid not growing a hump?

The nuchal hump is tied to maturity, genetics, and dominance. It usually takes a couple of years to fully develop. While both sexes can grow a hump, it is typically much larger and more prominent in dominant males.

Do I absolutely need sand in their aquarium?

Yes. In the wild, they constantly sift through the substrate for food. Sharp gravel can injure their gills and mouths, leading to bacterial infections. Soft aquarium sand is highly recommended.

Can I keep two male Blue Dolphins together?

It is generally not recommended unless the aquarium is exceptionally large (over 600 litres). In standard tanks, a dominant male will relentlessly harass a subdominant male. A harem of one male to several females is the safest social structure.

How fast do Blue Dolphin Cichlids grow?

They are known to be slow growers compared to other cichlids. With excellent water quality and a proper diet, you can expect them to reach their full adult size of 20-25cm over the course of 2 to 3 years.

Will they eat my plants?

While not strictly herbivorous, their constant digging and sand-sifting will often uproot delicate plants. If you wish to use live plants, hardy species attached to rocks, such as Anubias or Java Fern, are best.
