Generally, no. Unlike brittle stars or chocolate chip starfish, Linckia starfish rarely accept chunks of meaty food. They rely almost exclusively on grazing bacterial films and microalgae from mature live rock.

Why is my starfish developing white, mushy spots?

White, decaying spots are a sign of severe bacterial infection, often triggered by osmotic shock (sudden changes in salinity), poor water quality, or starvation. Unfortunately, once tissue necrosis begins, it is very difficult to reverse.

Is it true they die if exposed to air?

While briefly exposing a healthy starfish to air is not instantly fatal according to some scientific studies, it is highly discouraged in the hobby. Air bubbles can become trapped in their vascular system, leading to tissue damage and infection. Always transfer them while submerged.

How large of a tank do I need for one?

A minimum of 300 litres is recommended, but the actual volume is less important than the amount of mature live rock. They need a massive surface area of established rock (often 50-100 kg) to find enough food to survive.

Will a Blue Linckia eat my corals?

No, they are considered completely reef-safe. They lack the jaw structure and dietary preference to consume healthy corals, focusing instead on microscopic films on the rock and glass.
