Why does my Bristlenose Pleco not have bristles?

Only mature males develop the prominent, bushy bristles across their snout. Females either have no bristles at all, or only a very small, single row along the edge of their upper lip. If your fish is under a year old, the bristles may simply not have grown in yet.

Do I really need to put wood in their tank?
