Why is my brittle star losing its legs?

Leg dropping, known as autotomy, is a stress response. It is usually triggered by sudden changes in salinity or temperature, poor water quality (such as high nitrates), or physical harassment by predatory fish or crabs. If conditions improve, the legs will slowly regenerate.

Can brittle stars eat my fish?

Most standard brittle and serpent stars are peaceful scavengers and pose no threat to live fish. However, the Green Brittle Star (Ophiarachna incrassata) is a known predator that will prop itself up in a 'cave' shape to trap and eat small sleeping fish at night.

Do I need to feed my brittle star directly?

While they will scavenge leftover food and detritus, it is highly recommended to target feed them once or twice a week. Offering small pieces of meaty seafood near their hiding spot ensures they do not slowly starve in well-maintained, clean aquariums.

Are brittle stars reef safe?

Yes, standard brittle stars are considered completely reef safe. They will not consume or intentionally damage corals, though larger individuals might clumsily knock over small, unglued coral frags while foraging at night.

Why does my brittle star hide all the time?

Brittle stars are naturally nocturnal and photophobic (sensitive to light). It is completely normal for them to stay wedged deep inside rockwork during the day. You will typically only see their arms extending when they smell food in the water.

About the Brittle Star

Belonging to the class Ophiuroidea, brittle stars are closely related to true starfish but are easily distinguished by their central disc and distinct, highly flexible, snake-like arms. They are ubiquitous on wild coral reefs, where they play a vital role in nutrient recycling by consuming detritus. In the marine aquarium, they are prized members of the clean-up crew, expertly locating uneaten food in deep rock crevices where other scavengers cannot reach. While largely nocturnal, their long, banded legs can often be seen snaking out of the rockwork during daytime feeding sessions.
