Generally, no. Brook Trout require consistently cold, highly oxygenated water with strong flow. Summer heat in a typical, still garden pond will rapidly exceed their lethal temperature threshold of around 20°C.

What do Brook Trout eat?

They are carnivorous and will eagerly consume aquatic insects, terrestrial bugs that fall on the water, small crustaceans, and smaller fish. In captivity, they can be fed a high-protein commercial trout pellet.

Why are they called char instead of trout?

They are classified in the genus Salvelinus (char) rather than Salmo or Oncorhynchus (true trout). Visually, char have light-coloured spots on a darker body, whereas true trout feature dark spots on a lighter body.

How fast do they grow?

Growth rates depend heavily on water temperature and food availability. In optimal, cool, food-rich conditions, they can easily reach 25 cm within their first two years.

Can I keep Brook Trout with Koi?

It is highly discouraged. Koi are relatively warm-water carp that thrive in summer temperatures that would cause severe heat stress or death in a Brook Trout. Their environmental needs are completely incompatible.
