Why is my Clown Loach lying on its side?

This is a completely normal behaviour for the species. Clown Loaches often rest or sleep on their sides, sometimes appearing lifeless. Unless the fish is gasping or showing other signs of illness, it is simply taking a nap.

Can I keep just one Clown Loach to control snails?

No. Clown Loaches are highly social and require a group of at least five individuals to feel secure and display natural behaviours. A solitary loach will be stressed, prone to disease, and hide constantly. For snail control in smaller tanks, consider Assassin Snails or dwarf loach species instead.

Why are my Clown Loaches making a clicking noise?

The clicking sound is produced by the loaches grinding their pharyngeal (throat) teeth. They do this when they are excited, feeding on a favourite food, or establishing dominance within their shoal.

How fast do Clown Loaches grow?

They grow fairly quickly up to about 10-12 cm, after which their growth rate slows down significantly. It can take several years for a Clown Loach to reach its maximum adult size of over 25 cm.

Why do they get whitespot (Ich) so easily?

Clown Loaches have very fine, almost non-existent scales, offering them little physical barrier against the parasites that cause whitespot. They are often the first fish in a tank to show symptoms if the water temperature drops or water quality declines.
