Why is my Common Pleco not eating the algae in my tank?

As they grow, Common Plecos often realise that commercial foods like wafers and pellets are a much easier and richer meal than scraping glass. They require a heavily supplemented diet anyway, as a clean tank will not produce nearly enough algae to sustain an adult.

Does my pleco really need driftwood?

Yes, absolutely. They rasp at the driftwood to ingest lignin and cellulose, which are essential for their digestive system to function correctly. Without it, they can suffer from malnutrition and digestive blockages.

How fast do Common Plecos grow?

Extremely fast. A well-fed juvenile can easily grow from 5 cm to over 20 cm in its first year, and will continue growing to reach 35 to 50 cm within just a few years.

Why is my pleco bothering my other fish at night?

Common Plecos are nocturnal and can develop a taste for the nutritious slime coat of other fish. They often target broad, flat-bodied, slow-moving tankmates (like Discus or Goldfish) while they are resting, which causes serious stress and open wounds.

Can I keep a Common Pleco in a 100-litre tank?

No. While they are often sold at a size suitable for small tanks, they will rapidly outgrow a 100-litre aquarium. Stunting their growth through inadequate space leads to severe health issues and a drastically shortened lifespan. An adult needs a minimum of 500 litres.

About the Common Pleco

The Common Pleco is arguably the most misunderstood fish in the aquarium trade. Sold as tiny, highly effective algae-eaters, these heavily armoured Loricariids grow at an astonishing rate. They transform from cute 5 cm juveniles into massive, 45 cm behemoths that produce a colossal amount of waste. Belonging to the genus Pterygoplichthys (distinguishable from true Hypostomus by having 10 or more dorsal fin rays), they are fascinating, prehistoric-looking creatures covered in bony plates, but they require truly enormous aquariums to thrive.
