How do I tell a Crucian Carp from a Goldfish or Common Carp?

Crucians have absolutely no barbels, which distinguishes them from Common Carp. Compared to a brown, wild-type Goldfish, a pure Crucian has a convex (outwardly rounded) dorsal fin, a distinctly golden-bronze hue, and 31 to 35 scales along its lateral line.

Can Crucian Carp survive in a pond that freezes over?

Yes, provided the pond does not freeze completely solid to the bottom. They are uniquely adapted to survive under thick ice with virtually no oxygen for several months.

Do Crucian Carp eat pond plants?

They may occasionally nibble on soft shoots and algae, but they are far less destructive than Common Carp or Koi and generally will not decimate a planted wildlife pond.

Why are my Crucian Carp breeding with my Goldfish?

They are both closely related members of the Carassius genus and crossbreed very easily. To maintain a pure strain of Crucian Carp, they must never be kept in the same pond as Goldfish or Common Carp.
