While some highly successful keepers use tap water, RO water remineralised with shrimp-specific GH+ salts is highly recommended. Tap water often contains fluctuating minerals, chloramines, or trace heavy metals that can crash a sensitive Caridina colony.

Can I keep Crystal Red Shrimp with Cherry Shrimp?

Yes, they can coexist without interbreeding because they belong to different genera (Caridina vs Neocaridina). However, it is difficult to find a perfect middle ground for water parameters, and the more adaptable Cherry Shrimp often outcompete the Bee Shrimp over time.

How often do Crystal Red Shrimp breed?

Once a colony is established in optimal, stable conditions, mature females can become 'berried' (carry eggs) every 4 to 6 weeks. A single female can carry between 20 and 40 eggs at a time.

Why do my shrimp die immediately after a water change?

Shrimp are highly sensitive to sudden changes in their environment. If the new water is not matched in temperature, pH, and hardness, or if the water change volume is too large (over 20%), the resulting shock can induce premature moulting or death.

About the Crystal Red Shrimp

The Crystal Red Shrimp is a stunning colour mutation of the wild Bee Shrimp, originally selectively bred in Japan in the 1990s. It has since become one of the most iconic and highly prized freshwater invertebrates in the aquarium hobby. Taxonomically, the wild Bee Shrimp was formally described as Caridina logemanni in 2014, separating it from the closely related Tiger Shrimp (C. mariae) and true C. cantonensis. Their opaque, contrasting bands of red and white (or black and white in the standard form) have led to an extensive grading system based on colour coverage and pattern purity.
