Why are my Demasoni Cichlids chasing and killing each other?

Demasoni are highly aggressive toward their own species. If you keep them in a small group (fewer than 12), the dominant fish will single out the weaker ones and harass them to death. Keeping a colony of 12 to 15 or more helps disperse this aggression.

Can I feed them normal tropical fish flakes?

No, standard tropical flakes often contain too much protein and insufficient plant matter. Demasoni are strict herbivores and require a diet rich in spirulina and algae to prevent a fatal condition known as 'Malawi bloat'.

How can I tell the males and females apart?

It is notoriously difficult, as both sexes share the same vivid blue and black barring. Males may occasionally grow slightly larger and exhibit a more pronounced egg spot on their anal fin, but 'venting' (examining their underside) is the only truly reliable method.

Can I keep Demasoni with peaceful community fish?

Absolutely not. The required hard, alkaline water will stress most community fish, and the Demasoni's extreme aggression will quickly result in the death of peaceful tank mates.

Do I need rocks in a Demasoni tank?

Yes, extensive rockwork is non-negotiable. They are rock-dwelling fish that need numerous caves and tunnels to establish territories and hide from aggressive tank mates. Without rocks, they will become intensely stressed.

About the Demasoni Cichlid

First described in 1994 by Ad Konings, the Demasoni Cichlid quickly became a favourite among African cichlid enthusiasts. Originally classified as *Pseudotropheus*, it was moved to the genus *Chindongo* in 2016. Despite reaching only 6 to 8 centimetres in length, it boasts one of the most vivid blue and black barred patterns in the freshwater hobby. Unusually for many mbuna, both males and females exhibit this identical, striking colouration, making a colony incredibly vibrant.
