Why is my Denison Barb losing its red colour?

Colour loss is usually a sign of stress. This can be caused by poor water quality, inadequate oxygen levels, being kept in too small a group, or a diet lacking in varied, high-quality nutrients.

Can I keep just one or two Roseline Sharks?

No. They are an obligate schooling species that rely on the safety of numbers. Keeping fewer than six individuals will result in severe stress, erratic behaviour, and poor health.

Do Denison Barbs need a heater?

They prefer cooler sub-tropical water between 15°C and 25°C. Depending on your local climate and indoor heating, an aquarium heater may only be necessary to prevent sudden temperature drops during winter.

Are they fin nippers?

Generally, no. Denison Barbs are peaceful towards other species. However, their incredibly fast and active swimming style can stress out slow-moving fish with long, trailing fins.

Why is the Denison Barb considered endangered?

Rampant over-harvesting for the global aquarium trade in the late 1990s, combined with deforestation, pollution, and dam construction in the Western Ghats, decimated their natural populations. Thankfully, almost all specimens sold today are captive-bred.

About the Denison Barb

Once an obscure species, the Denison Barb—frequently sold as the Roseline Shark or Red-line Torpedo Barb—skyrocketed in popularity following its introduction to the trade in the late 1990s. With its streamlined body, brilliant crimson stripe, and contrasting black and yellow fin markings, it is undeniably one of the most attractive cyprinids available. Sadly, immense pressure from over-collection and localized habitat degradation severely impacted wild populations, leading to an 'Endangered' status on the IUCN Red List. Fortunately, the vast majority of specimens available in the modern aquarium hobby are commercially bred in massive numbers.
