Can I keep Endler's Livebearers with normal Guppies?

It is not recommended. Endler's and standard Guppies are closely related and will readily interbreed. This produces hybrid offspring and permanently dilutes the pure genetic lines of both species.

Do I have to keep both males and females?

No. Many keepers opt for an all-male aquarium. Male Endler's are the brightly coloured ones and will happily live together without females, entirely preventing the issue of unwanted fry.

Why is the male Endler constantly chasing the female?

This is natural courtship behaviour. Males are highly driven to breed and will relentlessly pursue and display to females. It is important to keep a ratio of at least two females per male so that the females do not become stressed or exhausted.

Will Endler's Livebearers eat their own fry?

Compared to standard guppies and other livebearers, Endler's are far less likely to eat their own young. If the tank is well-fed and has plenty of plant cover, most fry will survive to adulthood.

How many Endler's can I keep in a 40-litre tank?

You can comfortably keep a group of 8 to 12 in a 40-litre aquarium. However, if keeping a mixed-sex group, be mindful that they breed rapidly, and the tank will quickly reach capacity.

About the Endler's Livebearer

Although discovered earlier, these tiny livebearers were brought to prominence by Dr John Endler in the 1970s.
