About the Engineer Goby

Despite being widely traded as the Engineer Goby or Convict Blenny, Pholidichthys leucotaenia belongs to neither family, occupying its own unique family, Pholidichthyidae. These intriguing fish undergo a spectacular metamorphosis as they age. Juveniles are striking black with a single white horizontal stripe—a pattern designed to mimic venomous striped catfish—while mature adults develop an eel-like appearance with dramatic, thick yellow and black vertical bands. They are celebrated for their active landscaping, constantly moving mouthfuls of sand to construct complex burrows.
