No, despite the common trade names of 'Engineer Goby' or 'Convict Blenny', they belong to their own distinct family called Pholidichthyidae.

Why is my fish constantly spitting sand everywhere?

This is their natural burrowing behaviour. Engineer Gobies are compulsive diggers that excavate complex tunnels to live in. This is why it is critical that your rockwork is placed directly on the tank base, not on top of the sand, to prevent a collapse.

Can I keep more than one Engineer Goby in the same tank?

Yes, especially if introduced together at a young age. They often share a burrow system peacefully, though you will need a suitably large tank to accommodate multiple adults, as they can exceed 30 cm in length.

Are Engineer Gobies reef safe?

Yes, they are completely reef safe. They do not eat corals or ornamental invertebrates. The only risk to a reef tank is their digging, which can occasionally bury corals placed on the sand bed or topple unstable rockwork.
