Do I absolutely need freshwater mussels to keep Bitterlings?

No. Bitterlings will live very happily in a pond or aquarium without mussels. The mussels are only required if you wish them to breed and observe their unique spawning behaviour.

Are Bitterlings suitable for a standard garden pond?

Yes, they do very well in garden ponds, especially heavily planted wildlife ponds. However, because they are small, they are best kept with other peaceful, appropriately sized pond fish rather than massive koi.

Do Bitterlings need a heater if kept indoors?

No, they are a true coldwater species. They thrive in unheated indoor aquariums where temperatures naturally fluctuate between 10°C and 22°C.

Can I keep Bitterlings with tropical fish?

It is not recommended. Bitterlings prefer much cooler water than tropical species. Keeping them at constantly high tropical temperatures will shorten their lifespan and compromise their immune system.

Why do my Bitterlings look silver instead of colourful?
