About the European Chub
Native across much of Europe, Squalius cephalus is an iconic freshwater species belonging to the family Leuciscidae. It boasts a muscular, torpedo-shaped body, a notably broad head, and distinctive brassy-silver flanks adorned with large, dark-edged scales. While young chub form tight, active shoals for protection, older and larger adults often patrol their territories individually or in very loose pairs.

Compatible tank mates
Reviewed guidance based on this species' recorded traits.
- Great
Common Carp
Cyprinus carpio
Both are large, robust coldwater species that thrive in similar temperatures and can comfortably cohabit in large fisheries.
- Great
Barbel
Barbus barbus
Barbel share the chub's appreciation for highly oxygenated, flowing water and are far too large to be viewed as prey.
- Great
Tench
Tinca tinca
Tench are peaceful, bottom-dwelling coarse fish that reach a substantial size, making them excellent companions for mid-to-top swimming chub.
- Compatible with caution
Minnows
Phoxinus phoxinus
While they naturally overlap in riverine habitats, adult chub are highly predatory and will enthusiastically consume small minnows.
- Not recommended
Fancy Goldfish
Carassius auratus
Fancy goldfish are too slow and clumsy to compete for food and cannot tolerate the strong water currents that chub prefer.
