About the European Whitefish
Belonging to the salmon family, the European Whitefish is part of a complex of closely related species and morphs that became isolated in deep lakes following the retreat of the glaciers. They are distinguished by their deeply forked tails, silvery flanks, and the presence of an adipose fin. Unlike trout or salmon, they have relatively small, toothless mouths adapted for feeding on tiny invertebrates. They are a staple of commercial and recreational fisheries across northern and Alpine Europe.
