Why did my Feather Duster Worm lose its crown?

Feather dusters shed their radiolar crowns in response to severe stress, which can be caused by starvation, sudden changes in water parameters, or harassment from fish and crabs. If conditions improve, the worm will usually regrow a smaller crown within a few weeks.

Does my Feather Duster Worm need to be fed directly?

Yes, in most aquariums, there is not enough naturally occurring plankton to sustain them. They should be fed phytoplankton or a high-quality filter-feeder supplement a few times a week, either broadcast into the tank or gently target-fed near the crown.

Can they move around the tank?

While the tube itself is stationary, the worm inside can theoretically abandon its tube if the location becomes utterly inhospitable. However, doing so leaves them extremely vulnerable to predators, and it is a rare, desperate measure rather than normal behaviour.
