Does a Fighting Conch need a deep sandbed?

Yes. They require at least two to three inches of fine sand to burrow properly, hide, and forage for diatoms and detritus. They should never be kept in bare-bottom aquariums.

Will a Fighting Conch eat my corals or other snails?

No. They are completely reef-safe detritivores and herbivores. They lack the mouthparts to attack corals or prey on other snails.

About the Fighting Conch

Despite its aggressive-sounding name, the Fighting Conch is a remarkably peaceful addition to the marine clean-up crew. The dramatic moniker actually originates from its unique method of locomotion and defence; rather than gliding smoothly, it uses a modified, scythe-like operculum to 'kick' or vault itself along the sand and flick away perceived threats. These snails spend the vast majority of their time partially or fully buried in the sandbed. From there, they extend a long, trunk-like proboscis to vacuum up organic waste, cyanobacteria, and diatoms from the surface of the substrate.
