About the Five-Banded Barb
The Five-Banded Barb is frequently confused with its close relative, the Six-Banded Barb (Desmopuntius hexazona), in the aquarium trade. Unlike the notoriously nippy Tiger Barb, this species is exceptionally peaceful and can even be quite shy in the home aquarium. They possess a striking golden-orange body traversed by distinct black vertical bars. When kept in a suitable environment with correct water chemistry, their colours intensify dramatically, making them a stunning centrepiece for a blackwater biotope.
