About the Freshwater Mussel
Freshwater mussels of the family Unionidae are large, bottom-dwelling bivalves often sold in the aquarium trade under the premise that they act as 'living filters' for the tank. While it is true that they constantly draw in water to extract microscopic food, they require heavily established setups with vast quantities of suspended particulates to survive. In a remarkably clean, heavily filtered modern aquarium, a mussel will slowly starve to death over several months. They spend the majority of their lives half-buried in soft sand, revealing only their inhalant and exhalant siphons to the water column.
