About the Golden Orfe
The Golden Orfe is a stunning, bright orange ornamental colour morph of the wild Ide (Leuciscus idus). Highly prized by pond keepers, they swim constantly in the upper layers of the water, bringing lively movement and a flash of vibrant colour to the garden pond. Unlike Koi and Goldfish, which are predominantly bottom foragers, Orfe are streamlined surface cruisers.

Compatible tank mates
Reviewed guidance based on this species' recorded traits.
- Great
Koi
Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Both are large, peaceful pond fish. Koi occupy the lower and middle regions, while Orfe swim at the surface, creating an excellent balance.
- Great
Tench
Tinca tinca
Tench are peaceful bottom dwellers that will not compete with the surface-dwelling Orfe.
- Great
Common Goldfish
Carassius auratus
Fast-swimming pond goldfish varieties are robust enough to coexist perfectly with active Orfe.
- Compatible with caution
Sterlet / Small Sturgeon
Acipenser ruthenus
Orfe are incredibly fast surface feeders and can easily outcompete slow-feeding sturgeon for food if not fed carefully.
- Not recommended
Fancy Goldfish
Carassius auratus
Fancy goldfish are far too slow to compete for food with the lightning-fast Orfe and prefer warmer, slower-moving water.
