Is the Heniochus Bannerfish reef safe?

Generally, no. While individual temperaments vary, most Heniochus acuminatus will eventually nip at soft corals, large polyp stony (LPS) corals, and clam mantles. They are much better suited to Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) aquariums.

How do I tell the difference between Heniochus acuminatus and Heniochus diphreutes?

It is notoriously difficult. Heniochus acuminatus generally has a slightly more protruding snout, whereas H. diphreutes has a more rounded breast and the black bands align slightly differently with the anal fin. Behaviourally, H. diphreutes is a safer bet for reef tanks.

Are they the same as a Moorish Idol?

No. Although they look similar due to their stripes and trailing dorsal pennant, they belong to entirely different families. The Heniochus Bannerfish is a butterflyfish, whereas the Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is the sole member of its family and is notoriously difficult to keep alive in captivity.

Can I keep more than one Heniochus Bannerfish together?

Yes, they can be kept in pairs or small shoals, provided the aquarium is large enough (at least 600+ litres for a group). It is best to introduce them to the tank at the same time to minimise territorial disputes.

Why is my bannerfish's long fin shrinking or damaged?

The trailing dorsal filament is delicate and presents a tempting target for fin-nipping tankmates like triggerfish, puffers, or aggressive angelfish. If damaged, it will usually regrow provided water quality is excellent and the aggressor is removed.
