Why is my crayfish hiding and turning pale?

This is a strong indicator of an impending moult. Do not disturb the crayfish, as they are highly vulnerable during this time. Leave the shed exoskeleton in the tank, as the crayfish will eat it to reclaim essential calcium.

Can I keep multiple crayfish together?

Yes, but only if the aquarium has a very large footprint and provides at least two distinct hiding places per crayfish. Territorial disputes are common, and cannibalism is a genuine risk, particularly when one has just moulted.

Are they safe to keep with fish?

Only with fast-moving, top-dwelling species. Any bottom dwellers (like Corydoras or Plecos), slow fish, or species with long trailing fins are at severe risk of being injured or eaten.

Do they need a heater in their tank?

They prefer cooler tropical temperatures around 20-24°C. Depending on your home's ambient temperature, a heater is usually recommended to prevent sudden fluctuations, though it should be set slightly lower than a standard tropical tank.
