Why is my Jungle Val melting?

Vallisneria species are prone to 'melting' (losing their leaves) when first introduced to a new aquarium as they adapt to different water parameters. They are also highly sensitive to liquid carbon supplements, which can cause the leaves to dissolve.

Can I trim Jungle Val leaves if they get too long?

Yes, you can trim the leaves with sharp aquarium scissors. However, the cut ends will often turn slightly brown and that specific leaf will stop growing, so it is usually better to remove the entire older leaf from the base if possible.

How do I plant Jungle Vallisneria correctly?

The most important rule is not to bury the crown (the thick white part where the roots meet the leaves). Plant the roots deeply into the substrate, then gently pull the plant upwards until the crown is just exposed above the soil line.

Does Jungle Val need a special substrate?

While it can survive in plain sand or gravel, it is a very heavy root feeder. Providing a nutrient-rich aquasoil or supplementing inert substrates with root tabs will yield significantly better growth and thicker, healthier leaves.

How fast does Jungle Vallisneria grow?

Under optimal conditions with moderate light and nutrients, it grows exceptionally fast. Once established, it can add several centimetres of leaf length per week and rapidly send out runners to colonise the back of the tank.
