Can I keep a group of Lemon Cichlids together?

It is generally not recommended unless you have a very large aquarium (over 300 litres) with numerous distinct rock piles. They are highly aggressive towards their own species, and a dominant fish will often severely bully or kill subdominant individuals. Most keepers prefer to maintain a single specimen or a confirmed, bonded pair.

Why has my Lemon Cichlid turned dark or muddy brown?

Colour loss or darkening is usually a sign of stress. This can be caused by poor water quality, bullying from tank mates, a lack of hiding spaces, or a poor-quality diet. Interestingly, keeping them over a very dark substrate can also cause them to naturally darken their vivid yellow colouration to blend in.

Will they dig up my aquarium plants?

While they do not eat plants, they are avid diggers. They frequently excavate sand from around and beneath rocks to create caves, which can inadvertently uproot delicate or shallow-rooted plants. If you wish to keep plants, tough species like Anubias or Java Fern tied directly to the rocks are the best choices.

How can I tell the difference between a male and a female?

Sexing is notoriously difficult, particularly in juveniles. As they mature, males tend to grow slightly larger (up to 10cm compared to the female's 8cm) and may develop a slightly steeper, more pronounced cranial profile. However, observing their behaviour during breeding is the only truly reliable method.

Do they need a specialised Rift Lake salt mix?

If your tap water is naturally soft or has a low pH, you will absolutely need to use a commercial Tanganyikan buffer and salt mix to raise the pH and hardness to appropriate levels. If you live in an area with very hard, alkaline tap water, you may only need minor adjustments.
