How can I tell the difference between a male and a female Maingano?

It is notoriously difficult visually, as both sexes share the same vibrant blue and black stripes. Males are sometimes slightly larger, possess a darker or entirely black belly, and have longer pelvic fins, but venting the fish is the only definitive way to determine their sex.

Why is my Maingano staying near the surface or hiding constantly?

This is a classic sign of bullying. In an Mbuna tank, subdominant fish will retreat to the top corners or hide behind heaters when they have been outcast from the rockwork. You may need to rearrange the decor to break territories or adjust your male-to-female ratios.

Can I feed them bloodworms?

No. Bloodworms and other rich, meaty foods are too difficult for an algae-grazing Mbuna to digest and are a leading cause of Malawi bloat, a fatal intestinal condition.

Can I keep them with Electric Blue Johannii?

It is highly advised against. Male Johannii look almost identical to Mainganos. The intense visual similarity will trigger severe, often fatal, territorial aggression, and the two species will readily crossbreed, resulting in hybrid fry.

Why is my female Maingano refusing to eat?

If her jaw appears enlarged or she is making 'chewing' motions while hiding, she is likely holding eggs or fry in her mouth. Female mouthbrooders typically will not eat for the 3-4 week incubation period.
