Will the Mexican Dwarf Crayfish eat my aquarium plants?

No, unlike larger crayfish species which act like lawnmowers, the dwarf crayfish is completely plant-safe. They may pick at dead or decaying leaves, but they will not consume healthy foliage.

Can I keep them with dwarf shrimp?

Generally, yes. They share similar water requirements and usually coexist peacefully with Cherry Shrimp and similar species. A crayfish may occasionally catch a very young or weak shrimp, but healthy adults are far too quick for them.

Why has my crayfish suddenly turned pale and motionless?

It has likely moulted! What you are looking at is probably just the empty shell (exoskeleton). Leave the shell in the tank, as the crayfish will eat it to recycle the calcium for its new, hardening shell.

How many can I keep together?

You can keep a pair or a small group in a 40-litre tank, provided there are plenty of distinct hiding spots and broken lines of sight so they can establish small territories without constant squabbling.

Are they safe to keep with Betta fish?

It is a risk. While the crayfish is too small to kill a Betta, it might nip the Betta's flowing fins if it sleeps on the bottom. Conversely, an aggressive Betta might hunt and eat a dwarf crayfish, especially after a moult.

The Mexican Dwarf Crayfish, scientifically known as Cambarellus patzcuarensis, is a tiny crustacean that has taken the aquatic hobby by storm. While the wild variety sports a mottled brown and grey camouflage, the selectively bred 'CPO' (Cambarellus patzcuarensis var. Orange) is highly prized for its brilliant tangerine colouration. Reaching a maximum length of just 4 cm, they are true dwarf crayfish. Their small size makes them much safer for community aquariums than their larger, more destructive relatives.
