Does Monte Carlo need CO2?

While it can survive and slowly spread without supplemental CO2 in a well-balanced low-tech setup, CO2 injection is highly recommended if you want to achieve a dense, thick carpet quickly.

How do I plant Monte Carlo without it floating away?

Divide the tissue culture or potted plant into very small plugs. Use fine-tipped aquascaping tweezers to push each plug deep into a fine aquasoil, leaving just the very top leaves exposed. The deep planting anchors them until their roots take hold.

Why is my Monte Carlo melting?

Melting is incredibly common when a plant transitions from its emersed (grown above water) farm state to submerged conditions in an aquarium. It can also occur if there is a severe lack of nutrients, inadequate lighting, or fluctuating CO2 levels.

Can Monte Carlo grow attached to wood or rocks?

Yes. Although it is primarily a root-feeding carpeting plant that does best in aquasoil, its runners can attach to porous rocks and driftwood, creating a beautiful weeping effect as it cascades downwards.

How often should I trim my Monte Carlo carpet?

You should trim the carpet every few weeks once it reaches 2-3 cm in thickness. If allowed to grow too thick, the lower portions will receive no light, die off, and the entire mat may unroot and float to the surface.

About the Monte Carlo

Known scientifically as Micranthemum tweediei, Monte Carlo has become an absolute staple in the aquascaping hobby. It offers a slightly larger leaf structure than Dwarf Baby Tears (Hemianthus callitrichoides) and is widely considered much easier to grow. It forms a dense, creeping mat that hugs the substrate, cascading beautifully over rocks and driftwood in nature-style layouts. Its vibrant, light green colouration provides an excellent contrast against dark aquasoils and hardscape materials.
