This is completely natural behaviour. Nassarius Snails spend most of their time buried in the substrate to hide from predators while resting, leaving only their siphon exposed to detect the scent of food.

No, they are strictly carnivorous scavengers. They eat uneaten meaty foods, decaying matter, and detritus, but they will completely ignore hair algae, film algae, and diatoms.
