Loss of colour is usually a sign of stress, poor water quality, or a lack of varied diet. It can also simply be a matter of sex and hierarchy; females naturally lack the red stripe entirely, and submissive males will suppress their colours to avoid conflict with the dominant male.

Do Odessa Barbs need an aquarium heater?

Not necessarily, provided they are kept in a modern, centrally heated home where the ambient room temperature does not drop below 18°C. However, using a heater set to the lower end of their range provides stability against sudden temperature drops.

Are Odessa Barbs aggressive fin-nippers?

They are not aggressively predatory, but they can become nippy out of frustration if kept in a group smaller than six individuals or if housed in an aquarium that is too small. A large shoal keeps them occupied with one another.
