Do I have to keep Panda Dwarf Cichlids in a blackwater setup?

While they can survive in slightly clearer water, true blackwater conditions (soft, acidic, and tannin-rich) are highly recommended. This mimics their natural environment, reduces stress, boosts their immune system, and is usually required to trigger successful breeding.

Can I keep two males together?

It is generally not recommended unless the aquarium is exceptionally large (over 200 litres) with completely broken sightlines. Males are territorial and will fight, often leading to severe stress or death for the weaker fish.

Why is my female Panda Apisto suddenly turning bright yellow and aggressive?

This is her breeding dress. When ready to spawn, or while actively guarding eggs and fry in a cave, the female's yellow colouration intensifies and her black spots become very stark. Her aggression is maternal instinct kicking in to protect her brood.

Will they eat my shrimp?

They are micro-predators, so dwarf shrimp like Neocaridina (Cherry Shrimp) run a high risk of being hunted, especially shrimplets. Larger species like Amano shrimp or Bamboo shrimp are usually safe once fully grown.

What is the best substrate for them?

Fine, soft sand is essential. Apistogramma species are 'earth-eaters' on a miniature scale; they take mouthfuls of substrate, sift out edible micro-organisms, and expel the sand through their gills. Gravel can damage their delicate gill plates.
