It is highly discouraged. Coarse or sharp gravel will slowly wear away their delicate barbels, which they need for finding food. Always use fine, soft sand for Corydoras.

Why is my cory darting to the water's surface?

Corydoras have a modified digestive tract that allows them to take in atmospheric oxygen. An occasional dart to the surface is perfectly normal. However, if they are doing it constantly, check your water parameters, as it may indicate poor water quality or low dissolved oxygen.

About the Peppered Cory

Their heavily armoured bodies are decorated in an irregular, dark mottled pattern over a pale metallic base, giving them the appearance of being dusted with black pepper. They are tireless foragers, constantly sifting through the substrate in search of morsels, making them both an entertaining and highly practical addition to a community aquarium. Note that recent taxonomic revisions have proposed moving this species to the genus *Hoplisoma*, though the aquarium trade overwhelmingly retains the *Corydoras* moniker.
