No, a Pistol Shrimp can live perfectly well on its own and will continue to dig and build burrows. However, pairing them with a compatible watchman goby provides a fascinating natural behaviour that is highly rewarding to watch.

Why is my Pistol Shrimp always hiding?

They are natural burrowers and spend the vast majority of their time maintaining their tunnel systems. You will usually only see them near the entrance when they are pushing out sand or searching for food.

Can a Pistol Shrimp break my aquarium glass?

No, this is a common myth. While the snap is incredibly loud and powerful enough to stun tiny prey, it does not generate enough physical force through the water to crack or break standard aquarium glass. (Mantis shrimp are a different story!)

Will a Pistol Shrimp eat my other shrimp?

Generally, no. While they might aggressively snap at other shrimp that try to invade their burrow, they are primarily scavengers rather than active hunters of similar-sized tank mates. Very tiny dwarf shrimp, however, may be at risk.
