The easiest way to differentiate them is the white facial marking. The Powder Brown Tang (A. japonicus) has a large, broad white patch that extends from the bottom of the eye all the way to the upper lip. The Whitecheek Tang (A. nigricans) only has a small, distinct white spot directly underneath the eye.

Is the Powder Brown Tang reef safe?

Yes, it is completely reef safe. They are dedicated herbivores that spend their days grazing on nuisance algae from rockwork and the base of corals, and will completely ignore both your corals and ornamental invertebrates.

Can I keep two Powder Brown Tangs together?

It is highly discouraged. Unless housed in an immense public-style aquarium (thousands of litres), they will be aggressively territorial towards one another, usually leading to severe injury or death.
