About the Powder Brown Tang
The Powder Brown Tang, often distinguished as the White-faced Surgeonfish, is a highly sought-after marine species boasting a subtle yet elegant colour palette. Featuring a deep brownish-grey body, striking bright yellow accents, and a distinctive white facial band, it forms an arresting visual presence in the aquarium. As an active swimmer, it utilises the entire water column, bringing constant motion to the display. While peaceful towards dissimilar tankmates, it maintains the classic Acanthurid intolerance for rival tangs.

Compatible tank mates
Reviewed guidance based on this species' recorded traits.
- Great
Ocellaris Clownfish
Amphiprion ocellaris
Peaceful, occupies a different zone, and presents a completely dissimilar body shape, triggering no territorial response from the tang.
- Great
Sixline Wrasse
Pseudocheilinus hexataenia
Fast and agile reef dweller that focuses on micro-invertebrates, filling a different ecological niche without competing for algae.
- Great
Coral Beauty Angelfish
Centropyge bispinosa
Robust enough to handle the active environment and visually distinct enough to avoid the tang's aggression.
- Compatible with caution
Yellow Tang
Zebrasoma flavescens
Different genus but still a surgeonfish; territorial disputes may arise unless the aquarium is exceptionally large and they are introduced simultaneously.
- Compatible with caution
Foxface Rabbitfish
Siganus vulpinus
Competes directly for benthic algae, though the Foxface's venomous spines usually deter serious harassment.
- Not recommended
Whitecheek Tang
Acanthurus nigricans
Visually and biologically too similar; housing congeneric species with analogous colouration almost guarantees lethal aggression.
- Not recommended
Powder Blue Tang
Acanthurus leucosternon
Highly aggressive congener; both species will fight relentlessly over dominance and grazing territory.
