This is their natural feeding behaviour, known as geophagy. They scoop up mouthfuls of sand, filter out edible invertebrates and organic matter, and expel the clean sand through their gills and mouth.

Can I keep Geophagus on gravel?

No. Keeping them on gravel is highly dangerous. They will attempt to sift it, which can cause severe gill damage, abrasions, and life-threatening bacterial infections. Fine sand is absolutely essential.

At what size do males develop the red head?

The orange-red colouration on the head typically begins to show when the fish reach around 8 to 10 cm in length. It intensifies as the fish matures, particularly in dominant males.

Will they destroy my live plants?

While they don't generally eat plants, their constant digging and sand sifting will uproot any plants buried in the substrate. If you want a planted tank, it is best to use epiphytes like Anubias or Java Fern attached to wood or rocks.

How many should I keep together?
