Why isn't my Red Rainbowfish turning red?

Colouration depends on age, sex, and hierarchy. Only mature males develop the intense red colour, usually starting around 5-7cm in length. Furthermore, if you only keep one male without females, he may never feel the need to display his brightest breeding colours. Poor water quality or a lack of colour-enhancing foods can also wash them out.

Do I have to keep males and females together?

While an all-male tank is possible, keeping a mixed-sex shoal (ideally with a ratio of 1 male to 2 females) is highly recommended. The presence of females encourages natural displaying behaviours, which is when the males exhibit their most vibrant red colours.

What size tank do Red Rainbowfish need?

Because they are incredibly active and grow up to 15cm, they require a tank that is at least 120cm (4 feet) long, translating to a minimum volume of about 200 litres. Shorter tanks will stunt their swimming habits and cause stress.

Why are my rainbowfish constantly swimming at the surface and gasping?

This is usually a sign of low dissolved oxygen or poor water quality (such as high ammonia or nitrite). Red Rainbowfish are active and need highly oxygenated water. Ensure your filter is agitating the water surface sufficiently and check your water parameters immediately.

Are Red Rainbowfish safe to keep with live plants?

Yes, they are completely safe for planted aquariums. They do not eat or uproot aquatic plants, though they will frequently pick at the leaves to consume soft algae, biofilm, or small microorganisms.
