Do Rosy Barbs need a heater?

Not necessarily. Rosy Barbs are subtropical and prefer cooler water temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. If your home stays within this range year-round, an unheated indoor tank is perfectly suitable.

Will Rosy Barbs nip my other fishes' fins?

They have a reputation for fin-nipping, but this is usually a symptom of stress from being kept in too small a group. If you keep a shoal of at least six (preferably more) and avoid tank mates with slow movements and trailing fins, they will generally keep to themselves.

How many Rosy Barbs should I keep together?

You should keep an absolute minimum of six Rosy Barbs, but a group of 8 to 12 is much better. Larger groups dilute their natural boisterousness and encourage them to display their best colours and behaviours.

Why is my Rosy Barb losing its pink colour?

Loss of colour is typically caused by stress, poor water quality, or an inadequate diet. Alternatively, it might simply be a female; only the males develop the intense, rosy-red flush, while females are naturally a more subdued golden-olive.

Can Rosy Barbs live with Angelfish?

It is not recommended. Angelfish prefer significantly warmer water (26°C+) than Rosy Barbs. Furthermore, the energetic, darting nature of the barbs can deeply stress the sedate Angelfish, and there is a high risk that the barbs will nip their long ventral fins.

About the Rosy Barb

The Rosy Barb is a long-standing favourite in the aquarium hobby, cherished for its metallic sheen and energetic nature. Males develop a deep rosy-pink to crimson flush, particularly when in breeding condition, while females exhibit a more subdued olive-gold with reflective silver flanks. Originally classified under the catch-all genus Puntius, they are now formally recognised as Pethia conchonius. They are one of the larger commonly kept barbs, capable of reaching up to 14 cm in the wild, though they generally remain around 8 to 10 cm in captivity.
