Why are my Cory's barbels wearing away?

Barbel erosion is caused by either keeping them on sharp, abrasive gravel that physically wears down their sensory whiskers, or by poor water quality and bacterial build-up in the substrate causing infection. Switching to fine sand and maintaining pristine water conditions will usually allow the barbels to grow back.

Is the Salt and Pepper Cory the same as the Peppered Cory?

No. Despite the similar common names, the Peppered Cory (Corydoras paleatus) is a much larger species that can grow up to 7 cm, while the Salt and Pepper Cory (Hoplisoma habrosum) is a true dwarf that rarely exceeds 3 cm.

Do Salt and Pepper Corys eat algae?

No, they are micro-predators and scavengers. While they constantly sift the substrate for edible morsels, they do not consume algae and must be fed a dedicated diet of sinking micro-pellets and small frozen foods.

Can I keep Salt and Pepper Corys with Cherry Shrimp?

Yes, they are one of the best possible fish to keep with dwarf shrimp. Their mouths are too small to pose any threat to adult shrimp, and they generally completely ignore shrimplets.

Why does my Cory suddenly dart to the surface?

This is completely normal behaviour. Corydoras have adapted the ability to take in atmospheric oxygen by swallowing air from the surface and absorbing it through their highly vascularised intestines.

About the Salt and Pepper Cory

Widely known in the aquarium hobby as Corydoras habrosus, this miniature catfish was recently reclassified as Hoplisoma habrosum in a 2024 taxonomic revision. It is frequently confused with the much larger Peppered Cory (Corydoras paleatus), but the Salt and Pepper Cory is a true dwarf species, rarely exceeding three centimetres in length. Along with C. pygmaeus and C. hastatus, it forms a trio of highly popular dwarf corys. However, unlike the mid-water swimming C. pygmaeus, it spends almost all of its time exhibiting classic bottom-dwelling behaviour.
