Why is my serpent star losing its arms?

Dropping or dissolving arms is a major stress response, usually caused by sudden changes in water parameters (especially salinity), high nitrates, starvation, or physical trauma from aggressive tank mates. Check your water chemistry immediately.

Will a serpent star eat my fish?

Most standard serpent stars (like the red or banded varieties) are strictly scavengers and will not harm healthy fish. However, the Green Serpent Star is a known predator and will hunt small fish at night.

How do I acclimate a new serpent star?

Serpent stars require a slow drip acclimatisation over 1.5 to 2 hours. They are incredibly sensitive to changes in salinity and pH, and dropping them straight into a tank can cause immediate, fatal shock.

Do I need to feed my serpent star, or will it just eat waste?

You must feed them. While they are great at cleaning up uneaten food, most aquariums do not provide enough waste to sustain them. Target feed them small pieces of meaty seafood 2-3 times a week.

Why does my serpent star always hide?

They are naturally nocturnal and sensitive to bright reef lighting. It is completely normal for them to stay hidden in the rockwork during the day, extending only an arm or two to sense for food.

About the Serpent Star

Belonging to the class Ophiuroidea, serpent stars are closely related to true starfish but possess distinct central discs and long, highly flexible arms. Unlike brittle stars, which have distinctly spiny arms, serpent stars are characterised by smooth, scaled arms that move with a rapid, undulating, snake-like motion. They are primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours hiding deep within rockwork with only the tips of their arms exposed to sense food. They are incredibly efficient scavengers, quickly emerging when they detect the scent of food in the water.
