About the Sohal Tang
Renowned for its striking horizontal black and white striping and the fiery orange scalpel on its tail, the Sohal Tang is one of the most visually stunning surgeonfish in the marine hobby. However, its beauty is matched by an incredibly dominant personality. They are the undeniable kings of their tank, requiring a colossal amount of swimming space to accommodate both their size and their rapid, pacing swim style.

Reviewed guidance based on this species' recorded traits.
- Great
Emperor Angelfish
Pomacanthus imperator
A robust, large fish that occupies a different ecological niche and can hold its own against the tang's boisterous nature.
- Great
Harlequin Tuskfish
Choerodon fasciatus
Durable and adequately sized; their differing body shape and diet reduce territorial conflicts with the Sohal Tang.

Niger Triggerfish
Odonus niger
Can be a suitable match in a very large tank, but both species have strong personalities and must be monitored for aggression.
- Not recommended
Clown Tang
Acanthurus lineatus
Too closely related with identical habitat requirements and extreme territoriality; keeping them together almost guarantees lethal fighting.
- Not recommended
Firefish
Nemateleotris magnifica
Small, peaceful, and easily intimidated; they will likely hide and starve in the presence of such an aggressive, fast-moving giant.
