Can I keep a Sterlet in a standard garden pond?

No. Sterlets require a minimum of 4,000 litres, exceptional filtration, and permanently high oxygen levels. Standard shallow garden ponds get too warm in summer and lack the footprint required for them to swim freely.

What should I feed my Sterlet?

They require specialist, high-protein sinking sturgeon pellets. Because their mouths are underslung, they cannot easily feed from the surface and need food that sinks rapidly to the pond floor.

Do I need to feed my Sterlet during the winter?

Yes. Unlike Koi and Goldfish, which enter torpor and stop eating in cold water, sturgeons remain active and continue to require feeding throughout the winter months, albeit in slightly smaller quantities.

Why is my Sterlet swimming with its nose out of the water?

This is almost always a critical distress signal indicating low dissolved oxygen in the pond, or occasionally extreme starvation. You must add extra aeration immediately, especially during hot summer weather.

Can I use normal pond disease treatments if my Sterlet gets sick?

No. Sturgeons lack normal scales and are highly sensitive to many common pond chemicals, particularly formalin, copper, and potassium permanganate. Only use treatments explicitly marked as 'sturgeon safe'.

About the Sterlet

Acipenser ruthenus is a fascinating, ancient fish characterised by its elongated, armour-plated body, shark-like tail, and prominent sensory barbels. While it is the most suitably sized sturgeon for private ponds, stopping at around one metre in length, it still requires a vast volume of water and dedicated, specialist care. They are active, constant swimmers that physically cannot swim backwards, meaning the pond layout must be free of tight corners and dense submerged weed where they might easily become trapped and suffocate.
