No, it is highly discouraged. They naturally take large mouthfuls of substrate and pass it out through their gills to filter for food. Gravel can become lodged in their mouths or severely damage their delicate gill filaments.

While they are not actively herbivorous and will not eat the leaves, their incessant digging and sand-sifting will almost certainly uproot plants planted directly in the substrate. Epiphytic plants attached to wood, like Anubias or Java Fern, are much safer.

They are highly gregarious and rely on a complex social hierarchy. You should keep them in a group of at least five or six. Keeping just two or three often leads to the dominant fish stressing the submissive ones to death.
