About the Tench
Native to tranquil, heavily vegetated waterways across Eurasia, Tinca tinca is a quintessential species for the traditional wildlife or ornamental pond. Often referred to historically as the 'Doctor Fish' due to a folk myth that its exceptionally thick slime coat could cure injured fish, the Tench is actually a robust, bottom-dwelling cyprinid. They are relatively slow-growing but can reach substantial sizes of over half a metre, making them a stately addition to large setups. While the wild-type olive-green Tench offers fantastic naturalism, the vibrant yellow-orange Golden Tench is particularly popular in the ornamental trade for its visibility.
