Why is my Vallisneria melting?

Melting is common when the plant is newly introduced, as it sheds old leaves to adapt to your water parameters. It is also highly sensitive to liquid carbon supplements (like Excel); avoid using these products if you keep Vallisneria.

How do I trim Vallisneria?

You can trim the leaves straight across with sharp scissors if they get too long. However, the trimmed leaf will stop growing and the cut edge may brown slightly, so many aquarists prefer to pull off the longest leaves entirely at the base.

Does Vallisneria need a special substrate?

While it can survive in plain sand or gravel, it is a heavy root feeder. Using a nutrient-rich aquasoil or placing root tabs into inert substrates will vastly improve its health and growth speed.

Why isn't my Vallisneria sending out runners?

A lack of runners usually indicates insufficient nutrients in the substrate or very poor lighting. Pushing root tabs into the gravel around the base of the plant often triggers a burst of runner production.

Can I bury the roots completely?

You should bury the roots, but you must leave the crown (the thick white part where the leaves and roots meet) sitting just above the substrate surface. If the crown is buried, the plant will suffocate and rot.
