Do Variatus Platies need a heater?

Not necessarily. Provided your home does not drop below 16°C, Variatus Platies can thrive perfectly well in unheated indoor aquariums. They actually prefer slightly cooler water than standard tropical fish.

How can I tell males and females apart?

Males are generally smaller, more colourful, and possess a pointed, rod-like anal fin called a gonopodium. Females are larger, deeper-bodied, and have a standard fan-shaped anal fin.

Why are my male platies constantly chasing the females?

This is natural mating behaviour. Male livebearers are famously relentless in their pursuit of mates. To prevent females from becoming exhausted, you should always keep a ratio of at least two or three females for every male.

Will they eat their own babies?

Yes, adult platies have no parental instincts and will readily eat their own fry. To save the young, provide dense, fine-leaved plants like Hornwort for them to hide in, or use a dedicated breeding net.

What is the difference between a Variatus Platy and a standard Platy?
