About the Venustus Cichlid
The Venustus Cichlid, commonly referred to as the Giraffe Hap, is a fascinating predatory species belonging to the haplochromine group. Found predominantly in the sandy regions of Lake Malawi, they have evolved a remarkable hunting technique where they lay motionless in the substrate to lure unsuspecting smaller fish. While they can be highly predatory, their striking appearance—featuring large olive-brown blotches on a yellow background, topped with a brilliant blue face in mature males—makes them a spectacular centrepiece for a large African cichlid aquarium.
